Ovako launches its digital Heat Treatment Guide

29.01.2018

Stockholm (Sweden), 29 January 2018 – Ovako, a Triton Fund III company, has launched its Heat Treatment Guide. This is the first digital tool on the market to enable customers to calculate the mechanical properties of a selected steel after heat treatment. The tool will save the customer time and money by offering a digital alternative to physical testing.

“We are pleased to be able to offer our customers the Ovako Heat Treatment Guide, the first digital tool of its kind on the market that helps customers understand how chemical composition influences the hardness of a steel after quenching and tempering. This user-friendly tool will further strengthen how we can offer our customers the best of our technical expertise,” says Göran Nyström, Head of Marketing and Technology.

Ovako’s Heat Treatment Guide provide the customer with a unique service to help choose the right steel for their specific application. By choosing a steel grade composition in the Heat Treatment Guide, users will be able to predict how a steel of a specific composition will perform after heat treatment. The user can alter the steel compositions to investigate the impact of different alloying elements. Customers then can compare different steel compositions by layering them in the resulting graphs.

“The primary information provided by the Heat Treatment Guide is the hardness that can be achieved as a function of the cooling rate when the steel is quenched, which presented as a CCT-diagram and a Jominy curve. Secondly, the tempering diagrams show how hardness and tensile strength vary as a function of the tempering temperature. A table also details the core hardness after quenching of bars in diameters ranging from 5 up to 500 mm using water, oil or air as the quenching medium,” says Joakim Fagerlund, the developer of the Ovako Heat Treatment Guide.

The Ovako Heat Treatment Guide is a development of the Ovako Steel Navigator, a digital platform created to help customers identify the best steel for their application. Ovako has developed the guide to be valid for most steel grades.
