WHO WE ARE
WHO WE ARE

We aim to build better businesses in Northern Europe

Triton was founded in 1997, with a belief in engaging with boards, managers and employees to build better businesses. We are entrepreneurs who invest capital where we see an opportunity to create long-term value.

Close relationships are essential: the people with whom we work bring detailed knowledge of their businesses and an appetite to effect change for the benefit of all. We strive to bring industrial, strategic and operational expertise, which we believe represent a powerful combination.

We are conscious that the decisions we take affect people's lives. The 38 companies currently in our portfolio play important roles in the communities they serve in northern Europe. They employ around 84,500 people and have combined sales of around €13.6 billion.

In 2018, we raised €5 billion for our most recent private equity fund, Triton V.

Triton has raised €14 billion from 180+ investors including public and private pension funds, endowments and sovereign wealth funds.

WHAT WE DO
WHAT WE DO

We invest in mid-market companies

We primarily invest in mid-market businesses principally in German-speaking countries, the Nordic countries, the Benelux region, France, Italy, Spain and the United Kingdom. They sit within one of three sectors: industrials, business services and consumer / health.

They tend to be companies that we believe are attractive in the long term, but which may find themselves out of favour or suffering from too much debt to reach their potential.

It is important to us to work with management, giving them the support they need to create sustainable value for the long term. We are action-oriented owners, but they manage the businesses.

Our investments are supported by three core principles.

Thoughtful investing - in businesses that have the potential to develop

We are experienced in the sectors in which we invest. We prefer the approach of getting to know prospective portfolio companies years ahead of investing in such companies.

We identify businesses across the region that could benefit from our support in accelerating their development. We are always interested in meeting owners, managers and advisers. We believe our investment record, our close links with local markets and communities and our sector experience results in Triton being an investor of choice for prospective portfolio companies.

Triton’s investment origination program sits at the heart of our investment activity, helping to spot suitable investment opportunities across northern Europe. It currently tracks more than 800 businesses across the region.

Consistent strategy

An experienced team working with management to execute a strategy and support the business in reaching its potential.

Since we started in 1997, Triton's focus has been operational improvement - i.e., improving the way businesses do business.

Plans often need time. We encourage management teams to put in short- to mid-term plans. However, these need to be within the context of detailed longer term plans that allows for shifts in strategy and further investments in the business.

The businesses we invest in have full access to Triton’s network with our industrial, strategic and operational expertise, specialist debt and structuring skills. Together with industry experts, we strive to work with management teams to: accelerate business expansion, maximise productivity, strengthen positions within existing markets by improving product or service delivery and focus the business on its core markets.

We encourage the management teams to take advantage of market opportunities and accelerate the development of any untapped potential.

Responsibility

Better businesses require responsible ownership and sound governance, creating stability and value over the long term.

Triton endeavours to be a forward-looking, responsible owner and a partner to all stakeholders: employees, customers, suppliers, management teams, board members, industrial experts and society at large.

Triton is a signatory to the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) and incorporate environmental, social and governance principles into our investment analysis, decision-making, ownership policies and practices.

Management teams are critical to the success of our investments

They drive the strategy and its implementation. We are grateful to the CEOs, senior executives and board members that have chosen to partner with us. The success of the businesses in which Triton has invested is the result of their expertise and dedicated work.

Triton encourages board members and management teams to take advantage of market opportunities and accelerate the development of unexploited potential. Over the years, we believe that Triton's performance and reputation for being a good owner and reliable partner have resulted in a strong franchise that attracts talent.

The Triton ownership model seeks to:

  • Cultivate close relationships with talented managers, chairmen and board members
  • Provide the capital to back good ideas
  • Ensure that there is effective and consistent decision-making on owner-related matters
  • Stimulate the entrepreneurial drive and urgency that often results in effective action
  • Maintain a sense of perspective - in business we know that there are often obstacles and difficulties to overcome.
  • Build better businesses over the long term.

We are always keen to meet good managers.

HOW WE BEHAVE
HOW WE BEHAVE

We have a fair, honest and straightforward business culture

We have a fair, honest and straightforward business culture. Creating better businesses requires a team effort: we believe in treating people the way we would like them to treat us.When we make mistakes or experience difficulties, we seek to recognise them, learn from them and improve the way we work.

When we make mistakes we seek to learn from them

In our investments we consider team work to be critical. We work with the Chairman of the Board and the CEO to help the board define a strategy and how to execute it. We then work as a group to follow it up and make changes where necessary as we seek to build better businesses.
